Birds         Tinamidae

An order only represented by one family Tinamidae divided into 47 species
Shy secretive birds that would rather run and hide than fly. They are more often heard than seen.

Most Tinamous are polygynandrous the male defends a territory the females are often in a group of up to four. The male will mate with all four who will lay three to four eggs each in his nest, which is usually lined with grass and leaves. He then tends the eggs and subsequent young. The females will repeat the process with other males.

This benefits the females as if one nest falls victim to a predator her genes will be safe in other nests.

The Ornate Tinamou is the exception the female defends the territory.
